Ñ Overview
The Authentication Manager control panel provides Kerberos authentication services for your Macintosh. It is required to authenticate to the X.500 Online Directory using maX.500 and your uniqname and Kerberos password. AuthMan (as it is commonly referred to) is still under development and a new version is expected soon, but the version in this archive has been in production use at the Campus Computing Sites for over six months.
AuthMan requires System 6.0.4 or later and MacTCP. If you can run maX.500 2.0 successfully, AuthMan should work as well.
At the end of this README, I have included first part of the README from the original release. Don't be too frightened but it; AuthMan 1.0.5A does seem to work.
Ñ Installing AuthMan
Drag the control panel file "Authentication Manager" to your System Folder and drop it in. Reboot your Mac. You can open the control panel to change various settings, but you shouldn't really need to do so (most of the settings have to do with Kerberos realms and servers; it should already be set correctly for U-M campus).
The Mac's date, time, and time zone have to be correct (within 5 minutes of the actual time of day) for you to be able to authenticate. To check this, first open the Map Control Panel and look at the Time Zone near the bottom. For the State of Michigan Eastern Daylight Time (which is what we are in as I write this) it should read 4h 0m and the box labeled "+" should NOT be checked (this corresponds to -4h from GMT). When not in daylight savings (EST) it should read 5h instead. After making sure the Map time zone setting is correct, use the Alarm Clock Desk Accessory to set the time. In Ann Arbor, you can call 665-1212 to talk to the time lady and get a reasonably accurate time of day. Make sure the date is correct as well.
Ñ Using AuthMan with maX.500 2.0
Once AuthMan is installed, maX.500 should give you the option of authenticating using your uniqname and Kerberos password (if you have a uniqname). If you have problems, please send electronic mail to x500@umich.edu.
